Book Review: Dear John by Nicholas Sparks.

Dear JohnDear John by Nicholas Sparks.
Book Summary: An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love—and face the hardest decision of his life.

Liana's Summary: John was never a good student. Cutting class, smoking cigarettes, all that stuff. His dad is no fun to talk to with his coin collecting obsession. So, John joins the army. He then meets Savannah, who seems so kind and perfect and beautiful. They fall in love, and, unfortunately, John's responsibility in the army tears the two lovers apart, and meanwhile, Savannah-- the one true love of John's life-- is about to fall in love with someone else.

I think that my reading of this book was totally 100% unfair because, first of all, I wasn't expecting it to be that good, since I just finished a Cassandra Clare book- and her books do that to you- make you think that all other books after hers seem inferior. And, second of all, I had Beautiful Creatures- which was on my TBR list since FOREVER- just sitting there urging me to open it and start reading. (But of course I finished Dear John first. What kind of reader do you think I am to quit reading in a middle of a book.) But, fortunately, I chose to read this book for a reason- because it's NICHOLAS SPARKS. I knew that I was going to get sucked into it in no time. And I was right! (: I don't regret choosing this book to read over the weekend.

Okay, enough babbling nonsense that no one cares about. LOL. This book reminded me a LOT, I'm saying, A LOT of Sebastian Cole's Sand Dollar. Although I did like Savannah much better than Robin. But I liked the other dude better than John because John has anger issues.

So, from the book summary, you can already analyse that this is such a tragedy. As I read the part in this book that's supposed to have the "OMFG WHAT THE HELL --I'm gonna cry now--I need a hug" effect to readers, I just thought "I knew it." because of the summary I read before reading this book. I so totally regret reading that summary, because if I didn't, then I wouldn't have seen the sad tragedy coming.

Usually, when I read a book, I'm expecting some action, paranormalcy, and, most importantly, romance. Which probably explains why there are so many more fantasy/dystopian/paranormal book reviews than Modern Day Romances. But really, Nicholas Sparks's romance writing just makes up for the absence of paranormalcy and action.

And there are some making love scenes, which weren't all that bad, since, you know. A man wrote this book. When ladies write porn, they go "MOANING GROANING LICKING SUCKING" and when men write porn parts, they just go "and they made love one more time" and it's so much more easier to read. Don't mind the awkwardness of this paragraph. omg.

Typical Sparks writing, you know? Fall in love, someone dies, blah. It sort of sounds like Romeo and Juliet, but I have to say, this is so much more romantic and complicated than R&J. Just saying. And I do think that this book was a love-at-first-sight, but it made an exception. (NICHOLAS SPARKS DOES THAT.)

I think I'm out of things to say. Well then. Folks. You know what this means?
It's time for Quotes & Commentary!

"It had to do with the genuineness of her smile and the warmth of her laugh."
Jeez. Love at first sight. In freaking Chapter 2.

"It wasn't just her slightly gap-toothed smile,.."
Oh. Umm..

"I work out and read."

"I really liked the way she looked in a bikini."

"There'd probably been too much Tim-watching in my humble opinion,.."
I know you're jelly.

"Then what does it mean? It's got to mean something. Like bravery or honor or something?"
"It's a profanity."

So, he gets a Chinese tattoo of a cuss word. LOL. Which reminds me of the stupidity of some people who get a Chinese character tattoo without even knowing what it says. Like, food. Or picnic table. Or something random like that. omg.

"I'd like to meet Savannah, too," he said in a voice so soft, I barely heard it.

He's such a horrible son.

"Her hair smelled sweet, like ripe strawberries."
Okay, the women-smelling-like-strawberries thing is getting old. Apparently we all know women don't smell like strawberries.

"..we talked and kissed for hours before falling asleep in each other's arms."
The first kiss is always the most entertaining to read. After that, it gets repetitive and old.

"Is that a promise?"
"If you want it to be."

Nooooooo. Whenever someone promises something in this book- it's not gonna happen. Great. Perfect.

"Dear John.."

EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE.

"Still, I wasn't just disappointed, I was angry."
Anger issues! Gosh!

"When I slid my hands lower, I realized that she was naked beneath the shirt."
No, derp.

"My squad was full of newbies.."
Ew. Newbs.

"..and he threatened to call the police when I tried to get past him."
DON'T COME IN OR I'LL CALL THE POPO. Really?!

"..near the groin incision.."
oh ew

"It was real, wasn't it?" Her voice had a tremor. "You and me."
No. You ruined it all up.

And, I suppose, that is it.

What did you think of this review? (:
