Book Review: Proxy by Alex London

Proxy (Proxy, #1)Proxy by Alex London
Book Summary: Knox was born into one of the City’s wealthiest families. A Patron, he has everything a boy could possibly want—the latest tech, the coolest clothes, and a Proxy to take all his punishments. When Knox breaks a vase, Syd is beaten. When Knox plays a practical joke, Syd is forced to haul rocks. And when Knox crashes a car, killing one of his friends, Syd is branded and sentenced to death.

Syd is a Proxy. His life is not his own.

Then again, neither is Knox’s. Knox and Syd have more in common than either would guess. So when Knox and Syd realize that the only way to beat the system is to save each other, they flee. Yet Knox’s father is no ordinary Patron, and Syd is no ordinary Proxy. The ensuing cross-country chase will uncover a secret society of rebels, test both boys’ resolve, and shine a blinding light onto a world of those who owe and those who pay. Some debts, it turns out, cannot be repaid.

Liana's Summary: Knox was born rich. He's a Patron, after all. Syd is his Proxy, and being the Proxy in a Patron-Proxy relationship is definitely the opposite of lux. Whenever Knox does something wrong, Syd is punished for it. But how far will it go? Will Knox do so many wrongs, that Syd is sentenced to die? Neither of the boys expect to meet each other, but when they do, what starts is one hell of an adventure.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, okay. I should have picked this up earlier. Like, way earlier. (Unfortunately due to time constraints I couldn't.)

First thing's first, the cover is hideous. Not gonna lie, and I hate to say it, but it didn't attract me at all. I know the cover shouldn't matter at all, but it sort of does. It's bad to judge a book by its cover, but even though we readers are not necessarily judging it, the cover doesn't do justice to the amazing story. Not, at, all.

I wasn't captivated with the beginning. I wouldn't say it was exactly slow, but actually more.. there-were-a-lot-of-concepts-to-grasp, with the technological, futuristic (I'll just assume it's futuristic because of the advanced technology), and the patron-proxy thing going on after all. Now that we bring it up, a note on the whole patron-proxy system. It's stupid. It'd be terrible if that system actually existed in our society, and what's scary is that I can actually see it happening in the future. Each patron has a proxy, and each proxy has a patron. The patrons are usually the snobby rich kids and the proxies are usually the poor, Valve kids. Well, whenever a patron does something wrong, the proxy takes the physical punishment is that. How stupid is that system?

In this story, we have:

Syd- I consider Syd to be the main character, and really, he's pretty awesome. He'd be my favorite character.
Marie- Marie is a good, moral, nice girl.. She puts her trust in people and believes her. But I really have to say she's pretty kickass, too.
Knox- And I can't believe for one second that I had to decide between Knox and Syd as my favorite character. Knox is a brat. And he's rich. He's a rich, fobby.. brat. He's a flirt. And he's sometimes really clueless. But I have to say that you can't help but love him anyway. In the end, I realized that he'd gone through a lot of character development and for that I am proud!
Egan-Ah, Egan. I wish I could have gotten to know Egan better before it all went to hell.. Egan was my favorite character for like, 2 pages. But I really admire his loyalty. I'd only bothered to put him on this list because he scored the position of Favorite Character.. for two pages.

That ending was just gracefully written. Good job, Alex London. It was a ghost ending. Sort of. If there is a next book, I'd read it. *pauses* *checks if there's a next book* Well well well, it looks like there is a second book. Called Guardian. Jeez, why does that title give me the creeps?

Overall, this book was really better than I'd originally thought it would be. Really should have picked it up sooner.
